Another year, another soca season quickly approaching. 2009 was an interesting year where the private events saw a low turn out when compared to the traditional fetes [Brewsters Road Crew excluded]. Maybe the recession was to blame but we are hoping for a better 2010.
One good sign for 2010 is that Soca on de Hill is back! After a one year rest, the organizers are preparing for a better 2010 and will include TNT 2010 biggest soca stars "Blaze and JW" better known for "Palance". Other inclusions or changes, call them what you want, will just not be the same old, same old from the same old folks. Look out for big things from new and upcoming groups like Passion Network, Chelsea Boyz, the creative and energetic Party Animalz and the Norsmen. We have chosen these groups because they bring something different to Crop Over. Fresh promoters with the thirst for something different . Passion Network leads the way with their party vibes. Look out for their own events......not only the cruises !! fetes and limes too.
I think the most innovative are the Chease boyz with their new event "Jouvert Cruise" We wont go into details, we'll let the boyz tell you more later. Party Animalz..... one group of guys that love to fete and after just one season, your name has been on the tongues of many with your Black Rock limes. Brewster Road Crew....are phenomenal! that's the best way to describe them. The very creative 24 fete was a success, although bajans are not use to these kinds of fetes.. it's here to stay.
The Old Guys..
Powerxfour, Berger Boyz and Baje... you'll have a tough time competing with the newer crewz this year. The young guys are bringing it and you need to do the same. In the past 3 years Baje has seen a steady decline in fete attendance including the out of season fetes, namely the Xmas night party, not to mention that stunt wanna pull wid Bunji and Fayan, just to get people in de place, dat shit only works once!........
Powerxfour a long-time staple of the festival has lost ground and will continue to do so to the new guys. The only well attended fete is Glow. All the other theme fetes are a waste of time.
Bergerboyz has lost focus......... maybe these guys made a few mistakes last year, but a possible come-back is on the horizon........Jouvert (foredaymorning for those who can only understand bajan). Chalsea Boyz coming too for this event. Look out party peeps.
Finally, we need to touch on the NCF who are the main driving force for Crop Over. Guys, ask 'sweet cakes' as some would call the PM, to put a few million dollars to promote the Festival at an international level, hire Gwyneth or Betty to make some large (real big!) costumes for the in-bound and out-bound terminals at both ports. Erect signs along the highway and not wait for Banks, who to do this to promote the local Beer. It is very costly to promote and produce Crop Over but the returns are potentially enormous.
Bajanfuhlife .com will be bringing some opinionated blogs throughout the Crop Over season and posting them on Facebook and Twitter. You are welcome to comment and share your views. Crop Over has now gone beyond any one Bajan or special interest. This is a Culture, this is who we are as a people.
