Curtis Eustace is king of all kings with a record breaking 9th win
Port-of-Spain – Trinidad - Sunday February 14th, 2010 - Dimanche Gras at Queen’s Park Savannah was filled with theatrics and a flurry of colour. Yet, we’d expect nothing less for the finals of 2010’s King and Queen Competition. Although the winds were gushing a little harder than is normal in the calm of Port-of-Spain, still 10 Kings accompanied by 10 beautiful Queens took to the stage. Tonight was the final opportunity to showcase the countless hours of preparation and intricate details that have gone in to each grand ensemble.
From the finalists only one would arise as King of Carnival and just one other as his respective Queen. Making history tonight was Curtis Eustace, who not only prevailed as King of Carnival 2010, but also as the record breaking King of all Kings. Achieving the title of King of Carnival for the 9th time throughout his career, he has much to celebrate.
In 2007, Curtis tied mas legend Peter Samuel with a total of 8 King of Carnival crowns. Dominating the late 70’s and much of the 80’s, Peter Samuel was well known for producing some of the most unique and inspiring pieces, such as the infamous, Man Crab and The Merry Monarch. Over a decade later Curtis has now broken Samuel’s record, making a name for himself in the history of Carnival. In 2005 he was the first King to achieve four consecutive wins. Tonight he is the first King to ever achieve 9 crowns. With so much accomplished, one can only wonder how future presentations for Curtis will fair in comparison to the excitement of Kings, 2010.
Following Curtis' depiction of 'Spirits of Mandingo – An African Legend' (425 points) is Leroy Prieto in his presentation of The Masquerader Eyo with a total of 398 points and Roland St. George’ (Fantasma), securing 390 points.
The new Queen of Carnival for 2010 is Rosemarie Kuru Jagessar, in her depiction of 'Wakanisha - The Sacred Water Bearer' (407 points). As she paraded across the stage the stunning blues from within the costume appeared almost whimsical. Close examination of the elaborate detailing and superior craftsmanship of this costume, reveals its deeper appeal to the conventional Queen of mas. Following Rosemarie is Peola Marchan in her portrayal of 'Red Sails In The Sunset' with a modest 383 points.
